HISTORY
It began with a dream.
A dream of changing an area through the art of jiu-jitsu. 90 years ago, Ron Mukai’s family began living and working in East Los Angeles. Scott Torres can trace his roots back to East Los Angeles. Both of them, having earned their black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, envisioned a nonprofit school where students could come, regardless of economic status or ability to pay, and enjoy the fruits of training in a martial art that emphasized discipline, diligence, respect, and hard work. And that in the process of training, that they would find themselves changing, which in turn would overflow to their community.
In 2022, the dream came true with the opening of East LA Jiu Jitsu.
The dream continues in 2025 with the opening of Boyle Heights Jiu Jitsu, with an anticipated opening date of March 2025.

WHAT WE DO
We empower students with the skills, discipline, and tools to control their own emotions and strive for excellence.
EMPOWER YOUTH
We involve families to ensure that change and transformation take place holistically, rather than individually.
EMPOWER FAMILIES
We embed students into healthy local community, which in turn impacts their neighborhoods and city.
EMPOWER COMMUNITIES
HOW IT WORKS
Every child, regardless of economic situation or ability to pay, is invited to participate into our program. Instruction fees are subsidized by generous sponsors and partners, as well as private donations from individuals.
JIU JITSU FOR EVERY CHILD
Students receive a loaner gi for their very first class. If they decide to continue with their lessons, new gis can be purchased for $100 (for children) and $135 (for adults), which includes patches and white belt.
If needed, used gis are available on an as-needed basis, which only need to be returned if training stops.
NO GI? NO PROBLEM!
Our instructors and assistants are world-class, having competed in competitions from the local level to the international. Their focus isn’t just on building amazing jiu-jitsu athletes—it’s on developing amazing human beings who grow into the best version of themselves.
